Therapeutic Massage

The terms therapeutic massage, remedial massage and deep tissue massage are often interchanged. Generally speaking they refer to the type of massage that is quite firm and is used to treat and prevent muscle injuries, pain and soreness that may have arisen from occupational, emotional and postural stresses in your everyday life.

A sports massage is exactly the same concept but is for injuries, pain and soreness caused by doing a sport or strenuous physical activity.

These types of massage are designed to obtain a therapeutic benefit. They differ from relaxation massages which are designed primarily to help someone relax.

Therapeutic Massage

Therapeutic massage is one of the most effective and readily available ways to treat and prevent muscle injuries, pain and soreness.

Therapeutic massage is based on the fact that soft tissue (muscles, tendons, ligaments and fascia) respond to touch. Most pain is soft tissue (or myofascial) in origin.

Muscles not only move our joints, they stabilise them, and they provide armour for the internal organs. Minor problems with these functions cause more pain than most people realise.

Additionally trigger points (sensitive points in muscles, which radiate or refer pain to various parts of the body) can mimic many conditions.

So by reducing soft tissue tensions and releasing the body, it is a great way to feel better, reduce occupational, emotional and postural stress and be more productive in your day to day tasks.

Benefits of Therapeutic Massage

  • Relax tight muscles: We tend to be concsious of when we have a tight muscle because of the pain it causes but many people don’t realise how much a tight muscle impacts on things such as normal movement and posture. This can also have a knock on effect in the body as other muscles start to compensate for the ones that are tight, causing them to be used for functions that were not intended. A chain reaction can spread pain far from the initial problem. Identifying the source of any issues and releasing all the affected muscles is the skill of your massage therapist.
  • Relieve pain: pain is the body’s way of telling you that something is wrong, so masking it with painkillers is seldom a good solution. A painful muscle cannot function properly, but by relieving the pain, normal function can start to resume.
  • Prevent or minimise injuries: by keeping muscles relaxed and functioning properly we are reducing are liklihood for injuries, and improving our chances for a speedy recovery should we become injured.
  • Improve blood circulation: Massage causes blood to move in and out of muscles and joints, enhancing circulation.
  • Reduce stress: Massage is an effective way to reduce stress and thereby improve your overally health and wellbeing.
