Gait Analysis

Our Gait Analysis is the key to understanding your biomechanics and unlocking many issues.

  • Improving poor posture and mobility
  • Diagnosing injuries and identifying why they occurred
  • Analysing movement in sport to improve form and performance
  • Understanding gait to prescribe the correct footwear

We all know the benefits that regular exercise can bring to our overall health and wellbeing.  However, regular exercise, whether it is running, cycling, Nordic walking, golf or team sports, does bring with it an increased risk of injury.

If you are suffering from pain or an injury it can sometimes be hard to decide how to tackle it.  With so many health specialists available how do you know who the best one is to go to.

Biomechanics is the study of the action of external and internal forces on the living body. Our Gait Analysis can help you to understand existing issues with your body, and therefore enable you to make the right choices.  Those suffering from back, knee, hip, foot and ankle pain can often benefit from this type of assessment.

Footwear Recommendation

The analysis is also the best way to ensure that you have the correct choice of footwear for any activity you undertake. Exercising in the wrong footwear can put your body under strain and you under increased risk of injury. Whether it’s a regular stroll with the dog, running a marathon, cycling or team sports, the range of footwear available is huge and it is very important to get yourself in the right shoe.

Gait Analysis for Runners

The biomechanical movement assessment is very popular with runners at all levels, where a good gait analysis can make massive improvements to comfort, pace, technique and ultimately speed and efficiency.

Proper running technique depends on many things and our experts are on hand to give you all the tips and guidance you need to get the most out of your running, whatever your level.

Drummond Clinic is also a Newton accredited Natural Running coaching centre, so we can also offer advice on transitioning to this efficient style of running to improve your running technique.

Why Choose A Drummond Assessment?

The biomechanical assessment works as a tool to address your issues because of the skill of our therapists. All our therapists are specialists in biomechanics and therefore are trained to see issues with your movement, however small and insignificant they may seem to you.

Our specialists also understand the impact of one issue on your movement and on other parts of your body, helping to unravel complex injuries and seeminly unrelated issues.

If you are a runner or have purchased a specialist walking shoe or trainer, you may have seen similar assessments, albeit on a smaller scale, in retail outlets. The main difference between having a gait assessment in a sports shop and having one at the Drummond Clinic is that we are biomechanics experts making independent recommendations, not retail specialists trying to make a sale.

The biomechanical movement assessment is ideal for everyone, whether you are:

  • old or young – we help people from aged 8 to 80 and beyond
  • very fit or very not!
  • sedentary with little or no time to exercise
  • someone who exercises to keep fit and stay in shape
  • a keen sportsman or sportswoman
  • an elite athlete

Using our skill and a range of specialist tools we offer a personalised appraisal of your gait, movement and posture.

Gait Assessment

The advanced assessment is the most popular choice and offers the most complete analysis and recommendations. It lasts for about an hour and consists of:

  • Consultation to take history of injury and current activity regime
  • Video Gait Assessment
    • With Shoes on
    • Barefoot
  • Pressure Plate Assessment
  • Full feedback on video & pressure assessments
  • Flexibility and Mobility Assessment
  • Programme for change

The outcomes of the assessment obviously varies from person to person, but generally include:

  • Suggestions for technique, posture or movement changes
  • Stretching and mobility exercises for you to do at home or at your gym
  • Soft tissue work – typically triggerpoint release, foam rolling, sports massage or physiotherapy
  • Footwear recommendations
  • Custom orthotics

Basic Assessment

The basic assessment is recommended for anyone who just wants a quick check of their footwear and peace of mind that there are no underlying issues with their gait.  After the consultation your therapist will conduct a video gait analysis and feedback to you anything that can be determined from this shorter assessment. If any underlying issues are identified your therapist may recommend that you upgrade to the advanced assessment for a more indepth understanding of those issues.

The basic assessment lasts for around 30 minutes.

What To Bring With You

  • Gait Analysis
    • Shorts, leggings or tracksuit trousers. We will need to video you from the knees downwards so if you are wearing trousers make sure they can roll up and stay up as you walk/run.
    • Current footwear. Bring the footwear that you wear most often, or that you wear when you are experiencing pain or issues. If you have just bought new trainers, bringing your old and new pair would be helpful. If you have previously or currently wear orthotics, please bring those too.
  • Cycle Analysis
    • Your own road bike (don’t forget your cycling shoes)
    • Appropriate cycling/triathlon clothing
