Personal Training and Injury

Injury can be a major set back for both the client and trainer. It can put certain goals on hold and may even stop a client from training for a period of time. When clients who are carrying injuries sign up for personal training, an injury can generally fall into one of three categories.

  1. One third of injuries will generally resolve themselves given time and the trainer can continue to pursue the client’s fitness goals.
  2. One third of injuries will plateau – meaning injuries will fail to resolve themselves – and some clients will carry on with niggling injuries for years, content at least in the knowledge that it isn’t getting any worse and that the limitations imposed by the injury do not trouble them too much.
  3. One third of injuries will get worse. This can be down to the trainer’s lack of awareness, or this can be down to the client’s lifestyle which aggravates the injury and training just becomes a contributory factor. The trainer must keep a careful eye out for these types of injuries.

Every personal trainer should have a good physical therapist to support them and to sort out the injuries as they come along. After discussing the client’s injury with the physio the trainer should be able to devise a safe and effective fitness plan that will not aggravate the injury. A personal trainer is not qualified to assess injuries and should not tell their clients otherwise. It is however up to the trainer to do a risk assessment in regards to the injury and any further training sessions.
