Foam Rolling for Tissue Mobility and Centre Oriented Rehabilitation Exercise (CORE)

Creating motivation and compliance for some of the more mundane rehab or prevention exercises can be hard. This makes our job as therapists and conditioning coaches at the drummond clinic more difficult, as our expectations from you the ‘client/patient’ are based around your goals, needs and personal motivation to get better.

Let’s take foam rolling as an example and see how we can spruce up your exercises to give you the biggest ‘bang for your buck’.

Foam Rolling – The concept of foam rolling is similar to the principles of massage.  By producing broad or specific sweeping motions over certain areas of the body, we can create a soft tissue (muscle/fascia) releasing effect both locally and away from the area of contact.  This increase in tissue pliability allows for an increase in both joint mobility and strength.

Core Work – we all like doing this, as it gives us a feeling of work and the knowledge (as long as it is done correctly) that it is doing us good – as a strong core gives us the ability to move with better quality.

Let’s put these together and use both the new range of movement and available strength that we have acquired to the best of our ability by combining core work whilst delivering self-massage.

Here we have several shots taken from tptherapy.com, here using their SMRTCore approach we get a generalised approach to release work and work the core musculature at the same time.  Think of it as a 2for1 approach if you like.  These are just a few examples where we can apply this approach.

With more and more people doing a greater amount of exercise, not only will this approach help to create a more pliable and functional body, it will greatly reduce the risk of injury and also increase your performance.
