Since when could you get a prescription for your running shoes, I hear you cry?
Shoe prescription is about getting the right type of shoe to suit your running style. For example if you have a neutral foot that is neither flat or high arched, and does not roll in excessively when you walk or run, then you would go for a neutral prescription shoe. This type of shoe gives you good cushioning but no corrective support.
Other types of shoe prescription include:
- Anti-Pronation – Over-pronators tend to have unwanted roll inward from heel strike to take off during every stride. Those who pronate mildly often need more a stable running shoe to limit this unwanted movement.
- Motion Control – If the pronation of the foot is excessive these shoes will provide a greater amount of support.
- Supination – supinators tend to roll outward from heel strike to take off during every stride and need a flexible, cushioned shoe to absorb road shock while running. Unfortunately there are not any shoes that cater for this, so a neutral shoe is accepted
